Effect of Leaf Blade Removal on the Growth of Outer and Inner Layers Cloves of Garlic Bulb

Abstract
|
|
|
This study was conducted to determine the effect of leaf blade removal at 19 days before harvesting on the growth of outer and inner layers cloves (the cloves differentiate in the axils of second last foliage leaf sheath and last foliage leaf sheath) of garlic bulbs. The results obtained can be summarized as follows.
1. Inner layer clove weight decreased as the last foliage leaf was removed, while it increased as the last foliage leaf only was remained and the rest was removed.
2. The removal of the last foliage leaf and the second last foliage leaf decreased inner layer clove weight.
3. The decrease of inner layer clove weight was more greater than that of outer layer clove as the second or the third last foliage leaf was remained while the rest was removed.
4. The above results indicate that maintenance of intact leaves till harvesting is of great important to increase the yield of garlic bobs.
